The Crescent Moon and the “Evening Star”
Filipinos received a “front-row seat” last Sunday evening, May 16, 2010 to a common and yet always awesome sight – the “evening star” visibly sitting on top of a crescent moon. People were abuzz both offline and online as people took photos of this astrological occurrence and posted it on social media sites.
The “evening star” is, as many may know already, the planet Venus. As community member Wiser explains in a question, Venus is the brightest object in the night sky after Moon so people thought in the early days (before we has astronomy) it was a star.
Actually, when Venus is seen in the easter sky before the sunrise it is referred to as a “morning star” and when it is seen in the evening in the west after sunset (similar to what just happened last night) it’s called an “evening star.”
How does this happen, that Venus appears as a star? Nuscorpi223 explained that it’s because Venus’ orbit lies inside Earth’s orbit around the Sun. When the orbit of Venus passes between the Earth and the Sun, it also reflects the light of the Sun to earth so that when it moves from the evening to the morning sky, it becomes very visible to us and appears as a “star”.
To people who have just seen this, one question that may be on your mind is if there’s any significance to the crescent moon and Venus being so close together. Don’t worry, this natural phenomenon has no effect on Earth. Community member podi shared that planetary alignments have been happening for the longest time and there’s never been a documented effect to our planet.
But have you ever wondered why the crescent moon and star has come to symbolize Islam? This was asked by bettycatmouse and Schneb gave the best answer. He said the crescent moon and star symbol actually pre-dates Islam by several thousand years. Most sources say that these ancient celestial symbols were in use by the peoples of Central Asia and Siberia in their worship of the sun, moon and sky gods. In this Wikipedia article, it says that possibly the symbol became associated with the Muslim faith when the Ottoman Empire became affiliated with the Muslim world.

I saw this las night at around 7 pm. I’m standing outside SM Baliuag mall when i’m about to park my vehicle…. first thing comes in my mind was the symbol of the Muslims… i feel blessed when I saw it…

Will as i heard from old folks in my home town when a star very near from the near moon there is two signed ether a men or a women is very devouring or a bad signed. Which bad signed happened. One of my friend and other 2 young guys in our home town was stabbed dead in the other town while celebrating a town fiesta.

I saw this last night while I was in Quezon province. The sight is really spectacular. It’s just so sad that I did not have a good camera with me so I wasn’t able to take pictures.

These “natural occurrences” we see in the sky every now and then include eclipses, the aurorae, comets, novae, giant solar flares, and the ultra rare supernovae(ex.: the Crab Nebula).

I was surprised to see it last night. It’s beautiful. I didn’t know it was the evening star straight on top of the crescent moon. I called on my wife to go out of our rest house and have a look at the sky. She said, “Wow….It looks like a smiling Cyclop.”

This Phenomenon, I think is not new, it might be, in our generations. But for sure it might have occurs, before. The Venus is the third planet in the Sun, next to Mercury, and it has no moon in it. Unlike, Earth, Pluto, and Jupiter that practically has 63 moons. Venus might feel like, sharing our moon once in a while (hmmm). Actually, Venus orbits or rotates “backwards” or in a direction opposite that of the other planets. Because, it is next to us, their is always a possibility that it aligns nearer with our moon, or will looks like it is sitting next to our moon. But, it is way up, it’s 23.7 million miles away from Earth. So, the possibility of any collision is rare.

I just finished dinner from the restaurant with my fiancee and we sat in the park to have and spend a peaceful romantic moment and suddenly saw the amazing rare star sitting on the top of the moon and that was really marvelous!!!we both amaze and feel great and love afterwards..was very lovely.

Noong napadaan kami ng SM Manila, people were going crazy taking pictures and stuff. Akala ko kung ano na yung nangyayari, yun pala tinitignan nila yung mala-sailor moon na buwan at planetang venus.
…yeah,here at dasmarinas,cavite a look at the sky at around 7 and i was just amaze when i saw the star above the moon!! i think the star is rotating..huh.!? i just take a photo of it and luckily it’s a good shot! and i just uploaded it in facebook!! it’s pretty great huh.!? cuz it’s just my first tym to see a star sitting above the moon!!
well after that they say that it’s not a bad sign! it’s just part of everyday life to see something great ryt.!? ^^

it is great to see the hand-made of the father in heaven,one can use that sign in any thing but there is always a story to tell when God decide to speak to his people,it is great and shall continue to be a blessing to the people that saw it and why is it a blessing is coz the creation was sacred,celestial and peaceful.,the signal is reminding us that God is supreme and this happened during the election lets also reflect to the leadership in the asia mostly in philippines,its a peaceful and shall be great in a way.iam not a filipino but iam a Nigerian although my wife is a filipina but lets be frank,for every truth must prevail.Amen
