What is a Jejemon?

jejemon

It’s been the talk of the town for the past few days and the chatter is very evident online where people searched for it (It was the most searched keyword in Yahoo! Philippines last week Friday) and discussed it on blogs and social media sites.  So what is a Jejemon?  And why is it suddenly being talked about?

The country editor of Yahoo! Philippines decided to bring this question to the Answers community: “What is a ‘jejemon’ and why the sudden popularity?” Almost 400 of you shared what you know about the Jejemon and it certainly helped enlighten a lot of people about it.

Answers user Demi-LAncer gave the best answer to the question.  He shared that word “jejemon” was most likely derived from two words, “jeje” and “Pokemon”.  “Jeje” came from the onomatopoeia for laugh, “hehehe”, but with the “h” replaced with a “j”.

Community member Momonja defined “jejemon” as someone who purposely changes the spelling of typewritten words by alternating uppercase and lowercase letters, replacing letters with other characters, and by adding more characters to the spelling to create a different looking word but pronounced similarly (but with exaggeration) to the original word.

To better understand this concept, here’s a comparison of a normal text and its jejemon version:

Normal: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

Jejemon: dhUh qW!k vr0uwN phF0uX jumF3d 0v3r t3h L@izey dhouG

Plok explained that the jejemon “language” is in a way similar to l33t-5p34/< (for leet-speak) and LOL-speak, both products of the early days of chatting online (IRC-talk) and text lingo, but different in that the purpose of this is not to abbreviate or shorten words or phrases but simply to create a different (although more complicated) way of spelling words.

This phenomenon has transcended beyond language and evolved to an actual sub-culture.  It has come to describe the local “gangstahs” who dress up in a certain way (ever seen someone wear a “jeje-cap”?) and act differently as well.

So why all the talk about this right now?  Well, we have to thank presidential candidate Gibo Teodoro for this (or at least the person who photo-shopped his image).  Here’s the image that started all the talk:

Gibo_jejemon

I hope that clears the “mystery” behind the Jejemons.  Got any other question about the jejemons?  Please leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to get more answers through the Answers community in the next post. :)

  2. I believe laughing in text/chat in “jejeje” manner started as a typographical error (since H and J are beside each other on the keyboard, and has 1 key press difference when texting.) From then on, it was somehow accepted in the SMS/chat world.

Additional info: Jejemons also user punctuation marks as ‘design’ in their texts, like typing multiple periods or commas before the actual message or instead of using a period to end a sentence, they use commas, … tuLaD p0H nG gaNit0 jejeje,,

  3. From my point of view it probably began on internet games where foul language is prohibited. If you were a gamer before you probably know what I am saying, where chat box for the game quickly detects foul language and changes them into **** or a different word, and for such reason these gamers who probably wants to taunt his opponent will make another way to be able to say these words (some words which are not also foul sometimes becomes included in the chat box program banned list, maybe by some programming error). And so these gamers tend to change the letter e to number 3, I to number 1, Sa to number 5 and so on. Others change the spelling as long as it sounds like the original word, just to be able to disregard the anti-foul language program of the game.
And from my point view some people used this habit on internet gaming in sending SMS, and also in social networking websites like Friendster, which was popular when internet games became a flick.

Is this really issue that we should be aware about?

If reading such “Jejemon” phrases really annoys you, then why bother to read it or make a deal out of it, unless you really want to read this stuff and then get annoyed.

    Is reading this “dhUh qW!k vr0uwN phF0uX jumF3d 0v3r t3h L@izey dhouG” makes you stupid?

From my point of view, I guess not. Actually it gives my mind a little exercise to decode this. Like from what I saw from a website that shows this passage:

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteers be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.”

The worst part of this issue is that it became others made it fun in criticizing other people, which is very rude.

For me a better way dealing for these type of issue is “IGNORE”. If you don’t like it “ignore it” why make a big deal out of it. It takes only seconds to ignore it and then continue with your day rather than get annoyed and make your day not right.

  5. for me, from my point of view.. “hehehe” was replaced by “jejeje” its because its too tiring to press key 4 twice to make “hehe”.. so texters who wants to response to text as fast as they could.. “jejeje” would be much faster to create or whatsoever… and then as signature purposes, they will make their message as unique as they could ..thank you.. hehe.. (im not that good in english) weewwww…..that was hard.. hahaha

  9. For some reason, the debate on whether or not the new trend by the “jejemons” is good or bad, interests me. personally, I think their way of typing is…annoying. [:

From texting, they made their way over to friendster (eww), then..for some reason..they all made facebook accounts, wherein all they do is play farmville/fishville/petsociety and the like. Srsly.

Like, I think it’s better for them to type normally, since like others say, it’s becoming a barrier instead of being a medium of communication. So yeaaah.

Idk. :) i just feel like typing todaaaay. :)

  10. I remember my teachers telling us never to use ‘textspeak’ because it bastardizes language. Now we have jejemons.
How can we be globally competitive if we tolerate this?

  11. People tend to type their words in SMS as short as they can so that it would not consume multiple pages . But as these people ( jejemons ) appeared , they changed some people’s point of view .. They use more special characters to made their words longer .. and sometimes they call it “cool” .

Some also says that Jejemons type their words almost the same as Leet Speakers .. But for me , they’re not ..

I find jejemons VAIN in typing .. It may be an excuse if they just replace some of the letters with some numbers and special characters , but they don’t ..

    for example :
Normal : The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

    Jejemon : dhUh qW!k vr0uwN phF0uX jumF3d 0v3r t3h L@izey dhouG

    – in this case , words by jejemons were prolonged by excessive letters .. meaning , they don’t just replace letters but also add more of them .

I just do not want the Jejemon Language to be accepted in this society , though Philippines is a Democratic Country . Like now, this language is spreading .. What if the children nowdays read a jejelanguage and applied it into themselves ? Does it make them smart at their schools ? Does it teaches them the Standard way of typing ?

    ~ Just shared my opinion .. [:

  13. The sad thing is, these jejemons don’t really know that we dislike them. I know a couple jeje’s on facebook (they should go back to PhRenDdStHerR), and they joined the fanpage “Gotta kill them all, jejemons!”. It only shows they just wanna “fit in” by doing what other people do (which is to hate Jejemons). They lack so much education, they don’t even know what a jejemon is.

Well, I’m voting for Gibo. If anyone could be president, he might as well make this country better. Ibalik and mga jejemon sa elementarya. ((=

But seriously, it’s sad to know that jejemons are gawa ng pinoy. Everyone has to fix this now.

  19. I think the way jejemons type their words is not really annoying. They practically use it at times they wanted to have fun conversations or when they are bored. I don’t think they are using such language on business letters, school papers, legal documents, and the likes.

And i realy don’t think that writing their language is a form of idiocy. People who may think that way are narrow minded. Actually, they are tricking your mind so that you could process more out of your head. Come on! It’s a kind of exercise.ü

if you don’t want their thing, just let them be. But don’t insult them or any over acting thing. There are still people. It’s like looking at one’s religion: if you don’t believe them, respect them.ü

a friendly reminder: let there be peace on earth.ü dzhiosque.

  21. for some reason people consider being a jejemon tantamount to being cheap, uneducated or uncool. much of a turn off for others. well, as for me, its just plain irritating, not that I consider it as a typing manner for the lower classes of society, but it just overly violates the use of proper english.

  37. do some of u make it a point to criticize d way pipol respond to issues.? even if jejemons tend to type in words (or numbers or symbols or whatever..) the fact still remains that they are still human beings… Human beings who are trying to be entertained, trying to do something new… There’s nothing wrong with that… Just let them be.. Don’t judge them and don’t label them…

It may be true that they have a different way of texting or chatting but its just their way of expressing themselves…

Furthermore, they find normal texting and forms of communication quite boring so they are looking for ways to “improve” their ways of getting in touch with others… They have their own reasons… Lets not bother them… Be mad if they’re doing such things for nothing…

Besides, in a fast changing world like ours, we have to finds ways to stand out, after all, we are all merely a spec of sand in the vast shores of our planet… It’s time to move and to be recognized… It’s time to stand out…

    ^^ :3

  45. I just want to share an experience. 3-4 yrs ago, when the word “jejemon” was not yet in used, I received text messages very similar to these forms from someone I don’t know. It bothered me because despite my begging the anonymous texter to stop, other texters of this kind appeared on my cfn screen, even without my texting them back. They seem to be friends communicating with secret codes. I knew the messages were not meant for me(somehow I could decode some).I thought they were a group of hackers, trying to manipulate my cfn bills. My husband somehow was able to stop them and one of them apologized politely. What disturbed me most was they kept coming back, usually on wee hours. I was also alarmed when it came into my mind that they may belong to a cult, trying to cast spells on anyone (jejemons were not yet popular that time). My husband informed them that their texts are again piling up in my cfn, but to no avail. So he flooded their cfns with messages, then only did they totally stop.
The new Jejemons today are no big deal. The original ones, years ago, intrigue me. If anyone out there can claim that he is an original jejemon, you are the most credible source of explanation. No matter how simple or insensible your cause may be, it would still be the most interesting account to hear.

  48. Actually, “jeje” did not start here in the Philippines. Other countries where their language does not have H like Brazil or Spain, use jeje in their text messages but it is still pronounced as hehe. The jejemon’s way of expressing themselves is comparable to the Gay lingo but why did jejemon garner such popularity? Because a lot of us use Gay lingo as a part of our normal conversation whereas we don’t use jejemon in the common vernacular. We can only see these types in SMS, online games, and chat rooms. Alam mo naman tayong mga pinoy. Kung ano ang hindi akma sa social norms natin, we label it agad. Chill peeps. Hindi pa katapusan ng mundo kung mapuno tayo ng jejemons. Ang isipin na lang natin, pano tayo makakatulong sa bansa, hindi yung pasikatin natin ang isang passing fad because we put too much attention to it.

  60. to be honest with you, i find jejemons pretty annoying. i don’t know why, but the way they type really gets in to me. well, not just the way they type. actually, everything about them gets in to me. the way they dress, the way they socialize, the way they act, and many others. i don’t know if i’m simply prejudiced or i’m just not used to being with people like them, but i really can’t tolerate them no matter how hard i try. i can’t bring myself to respect them. i think i am slowly becoming a jejebuster even though i try not to.

anyways, enough of that. i would like to share something that i encountered in the net the other day.

    JEJEMON

    1) Usually seen around social networking sites such as Friendster and Multiply, jejemons are individuals with low IQs who spread around their idiocy on the web by tYpFing LyK diZS jejejeje, making all people viewing their profile raise their eyebrows out of annoyance. Normal people like you and me must take a Bachelor of Arts in Jejetyping in order to understand said individuals, as deciphering their text would cause a lot of frustration and hair pulling.

CAUTION: THESE INDIVIDUALS ARE BREEDING! THEY CAN BE SEEN WRECKING GRAMMATICAL HAVOC ON FACEBOOK TOO!

    2) Jejemons are not just confined to trying-hard Filipino gangsters and emos. A Jejemon can also include a variety of Latino-Hispanic fags who enjoy typing “jejejejeje” in a wider context, much to the disdain of their opponents in an internet MMORPG game such as Ragnarok and DOTA.

    3) Basically anyone with a low tolerance in correct punctuation, syntax and grammar. Jejemons are usually hated or hunted down by Jejebusters or the grammar nazi to eradicate their grammatical ways.

    On AIM or YM:
    miSzMaldiTahh111: EoW pFuOh!
    You: Huh?
    miszMaldiTahh111: i LLyK tO knOw moR3 bOut u, PwfoH. crE 2 t3ll mE yur N@me? jejejejeje!
You: You are a jejemon! Don’t talk to me, you uneducated, uncivilized retard!

  62. I didn’t know this is called JEJEMONS until I read it here! I have been receiving this kind of messages and I really don’t want to reply the texter/s. The texter seems to me like an ignorant…an uneducated!

The kind of texting we had before is still better and COOL!

  63. hahaha ..

i thought it was a new type of digimon or some kind.

so i can tame one, wahaha ..LOL!

as a teacher, that should not influence the children’s mind. and as an adult, could you take it to be a bad model to the younger generations? or you’re the one who were influenced by them.

    be – hu(MAN)e – enough guys.

    GOD bless.

  64. To really understand the Jejemon, you need to go back into the peak of the unlimited texting trend as well as the Friendster popularity among the teens. It is the mish-mash of both cyber-cultures (SMS/FS) which paved the way into the Jejemon culture – which is best observed in the trending of lengthy “comment/testimonials” in way back in 2005-2008…

  65. this is the jologs language. jejemons bask in the glory of being talked about. i find it very irritating. i guess they think its cool to be talked about even if people find them weird. i dont think there is a need to understand their language because it will only influence the way you talk and you dont really want that to happen.

  67. jejemons are mostly to be described as “over”.
yes, it’s true! Thus, making over spelled words or jejemon words are surely waste of time, irratation of the eyes, and waste of letter capacity in phone…
remenber: Simple is best! Simple is more.

  68. jejemon?
It only proves that language is dynamic, it changes all the time. And it shows how, we Filipinos, are so creative to entertain ourselves.
Pero sana di ito maging dahilan upang ang edukasyon sa ating bansa ay maging paurong.
These people, the ‘jejemons’, really need guidance. Kasi kahit sabihin pa natin that this is just for fun, nakakasanayan po yan eh. At mahirap po yan tanggalin sa sistema pag andyan na.
    Goodluck nalang.

  69. code or no code, freedom of speech or not, jejemons are not irritating but they are also starting to get on my nerves..

on the aspect of the novelty of jejemons, whether it’s us Pinoys who invented this culture or not, I hope this will not be a source of pride for some just because we can invent some language that translates to fun, lest we’ll be the laughingstock of foreigners who use proper English…

just the opinion of a kapwa kababayan…

  83. As an Australian who has worked with a good number of migrants from all over the world and readily interpreted thier variety of english, an oficial language in Philippines, I find it very difficult to follow the Philippine version of english. A very mixed up language, many abreviations, a variety of phonetics including Spanish which have phonetics of thier own.
Many will only pronounce half or less of a written world and leave the rest to the imagination. What my school teacher called lazy speakers. shorthand speakers. Schools need english teachers who can speak international english, or the situation can only get worse. To the detriment of international trade and communication.
