How can we help victims of Typhoon Ondoy?

I’m sure this is the top question for so many of the Pinoy Answers community right now.  After Typhoon Ondoy raged across Luzon dumping a reported 34 cm of rain, equivalent to a month’s worth of rainfall, in just 6 hours, more than 200 have been reported dead and nearly 300,000 displaced from their homes.

For a quick answer to this pressing question, here’s a list of some very important information for Filipinos everywhere to take part in the relief efforts for Typhoon Ondoy victims:

Now is certainly the time to use the power of social media to help our fellow Filipinos who have been badly affected by Typhoon Ondoy.  I recently posted the question “What can we do to help the victims of Typhoon Ondoy?” and if you have any relevant information or any creative idea that can be of help to victims of Ondoy, please take the time to share them.

Our news editors also posted this question, “Do you think the RP government is doing enough to help with Typhoon Ondoy’s relief efforts? Yes or no, why?”.  According to National Disaster Coordinating Council’s Anthony Golez, the system and local government units are “overwhelmed,” and are not used to massive relief operations.  If you have personally witnessed this and you have seen how they can further improve their rescue operations, then please share your thoughts and opinions.

Just check Yahoo! Philippines News for more updates about the relief efforts, for pics of Typhoon Ondoy’s aftermath, check out Flickr and this blog post for details on how you can help.  Thanks so much everyone!  I’m so proud to be Pinoy right now!  God bless!

  18. WHY BEG FOR DONATIONS? WHY NOT THE GOVERNMENT CREATE AND PRINT THE MONEY DEBT FREE THROUGH THE CENTRAL BANK TO DISTRIBUTE TO THE VICTIMS ENOUGH TO GET BACK TO THEIR OWN FEET? WHERE IS GOVERNMENT’S MONEY SURPLUS IN 2009? or why do we prioritise interest payments to IMF and WB? Where there is funding for population control and no money for the vicvtims? WHERE IS THE GOVERNMENT’S RESERVES AT THE CENTRAL BANK? WHAT ARE THE BANKS ARE DOING TO HELP THE VICTIMS OTHER THAN INSTRUMENTS OF RECEIVING DONATIONS? WHAT THE CENTRAL BANK IS DOING to address the lack of money to finance the rehabilitation? WE ARE ALWAYS BEGGING DONATIONS BOTH HERE AND ABROAD where most peoples now all over the world are also on the same financial-economic crisis and calamities? CREATE THE MONEY DEBT FREE, NO LACK OF FIGURES, NO LACK PAPERS AND NO LACK OF MACHINES TO PRINT THE MONEY. THIS MONEY PROBLEM IS NOT A NATURAL NOR A SUPERNATURAL PROBLEM BUT ONLY AN ARTIFICIAL PROBLEM THAT CAN BE ADJUSTED IMMEDIATELY. There should be no lack of money in times of calamities.

  21. Hi,

We’re reaching out to all the bloggers who talk about the Philippines in an urgent appeal for them to tell their readers about the disaster that transformed the country this weekend.

The torrential rains that pounded the Philippines, has resulted in more than 1.8 million people being immediately affected.

We, the UN World Food Programme, has identified at least 178 000 families in need of immediate food aid.

Please would you consider telling the readers of your blog about their situation, and encourage them to go to https://www.wfp.org/donate/ondoy to donate? Also if you’re active on social networks, it would help to tell other about it there too.

Even the smallest amounts help: $18 can feed a family for 2 weeks!

    Warmest regards

  29. WE just have to pray that no matter whats this circumstances occurred.. all was to ask from us is to trust our god and accept that his our SAVIOR! and ask his grace to shower us his guidance and protect us from any harm.. It occurred to me that perhaps we need not only to ask the world to send food and clothing, and for those further afield to pray, but that we need to ask churches worldwide to send us bibles and distribute it to our local station and share it with our people,, just giving them a hint to rely on our savior.and ask for strength for he will strengthened us..
    GOD WILL NEVER FAIL US,
    NOT NOW
    NOT NEVER!

You obviously don’t know the effect of printing more money and putting it into circulation.

PRINTING MORE MONEY WILL ONLY SERVE TO DEVALUE THE PESO MORE.

Print a million pesos for each and every Filipino. Go. Then, watch as the price for a piece of Juicy Fruit Gum skyrockets. Get it?

What officials could do is redirect their pork barrels to help the victims. The problem isn’t lack of money, see, it’s just that the money is disappearing into some people pockets.

Watching these kind of calamities is really painful for me looking into it, I think my co-filipino to avoid these kind of tradegy may we ASK ourselves WHY THIS HAPPEN? probably we can answer these things and let us wake up what is happening right now? My sympathy for this, how can I help you? My answer to this, I should keep on praying for us and Its the time to change and improve within us. And I’m doing my best here to call organization in Denmark to help my dearest co-filipino’s. May God bless us specially those victims of the typhoon may He touch everyone

  34. Against Eric Encina’s debt free money monetary reform proposals.

    1.

    @Eric Encina

You obviously don’t know the effect of printing more money and putting it into circulation.

    HERE IS MY ANSWERS BELOW:

Create the money debt free according to needs according to balance, not printing more money excessively. There is a lack of money in the hands of millions of Filipinos with or without calamities. yes there is money but money is controlled by the banking system and by the politicians. THE CREATION OF MONEY DEBT FREE BY THE GOVERNMENT IN TIMES OF CRISIS AND CALAMITIES OTHER OR RATHER THAN BORROWING MONEY AT INTEREST OVERSEAS can indeed help the economy in motion without debt and interest and too much taxes.

    # THE CASH CREDITS OF THE POPULATION OF ANY COUNTRY SHALL AT ANY MOMENT BE COLLECTIVELY EQUAL TO THE COLLECTIVE CASH PRICES FOR CONSUMABLE GOODS FOR SALE IN THAT COUNTRY, AND SUCH CASH CREDITS SHALL BE CANCELED ON THE PURCHASE OF GOODS FOR CONSUMPTION.

    # THE CREDITS REQUIRED TO FINANCE PRODUCTION SHALL BE SUPPLIED NOT FROM THE SAVINGS, BUT BY NEW CREDITS RELATING TO NEW PRODUCTION, AND SHALL BE RECALLED ONLY IN RATIO OF GENERAL DEPRECIATION TO GENERAL APPRECIATION.

    3. THE DISTRIBUTION OF CASH TO INDIVIDUALS SHALL BE PROGRESSIVELY LESS DEPENDENT UPON EMPLOYMENT. THAT IS TO SAY THAT THE DIVIDEND SHALL PROGRESSIVELY DISPLACE WAGE AND SALARY.

DIVIDEND FOR ALL IS THE ANSWER. Bail-out for the people suggests an emergency to save the people from recession or depression and help get back from calamities. P200,000 to every Filipino calamity victim shall be enough to help each one get back their feet.

    1.

PRINTING MORE MONEY WILL ONLY SERVE TO DEVALUE THE PESO MORE.

THERE IS NO ENOUGH MONEY! Who has enough money? AT PRESENT DEBT-BASED ECONOMY, PHILIPPINE PESO CONTINUES TO DEVALUATE. Therefore it is the debt- based economy that causes the losing value of currency, not debt free money creation.

Print a million pesos for each and every Filipino. Go. Then, watch as the price for a piece of Juicy Fruit Gum skyrockets. Get it?

YOUR ECONOMICS IS OBSOLETE. Creation of money based on real wealth of the nation as backed up by the state by legislation through the facilities of Philippine central bank IN BALANCE is the prerogative of the government. YOUR COMMENT IS STUPID. My proposal is: the government must create our own credit or money debt free rather than borrowing money at interest from the foreign and international banks and provide EXTRA BASIC INCOME OR SUPPLEMENTARY INCOME OR IF YOU WANT, DIVIDEND TO EVERYONE, OR SUBSIDY TO EVERYONE, not in millions to every Filipino, but a least to guarantee a financial-economic security to everyone in the amount that can help obtain the bare necessities of life in addition to other incomes or profits. MILLIONS OF FILIPINOS ARE IN POVERTY, UNEMPLOYED while the government is wallowing in the sea of debt at around $800 per second or P700.6 Billion interest annually. We avoid this disaster of debt finance if we can create our own money debt free.
    2.

What officials could do is redirect their pork barrels to help the victims. The problem isn’t lack of money, see, it’s just that the money is disappearing into some people pockets.

GOOD SUGGESTION BUT YOU SEE DO YOU THINK CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS WILL GIVE THEIR PORK BARRELS TO THE PEOPLE. PORK BARREL IS A PEOPLE’S MONEY ENTRUSTED TO THEM BUT you see money is wasted and misused for political reasons. PORK BARREL MONEY MUST BE GIVEN DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE THROUGH ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY OR FACILITIES NOT PASSING THROUGH POLITICIANS. SAME AS AID DOMESTIC OR FOREIGN AID. AID DOES NOT FEED DOWN WELL TO THE POOR AND THE NEEDY.

    1.

Eric V. Encina, shut up with that crap.
Comment posted on October 1st, 2009 at 2:16 am by Brett

WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME TO SHUT UP?

What is then the present inflation now? THE PERNICIOUS ROOT-CAUSE OF INFLATION IS THE GOVERNMENT. AGAIN, GUY, YOUR ECONOMICS IS OBSOLETE.

Because if you print more money, you will increase inflation. This means, your money will lose it’s value to other countries. ALL imported items will cost you more. This is basic economics.

BESIDES, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THE PESO WILL LOSE ITS VALUE WHICH I DO NOT THINK SO WITH OTHER COUNTRIES. WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS THAT IT IS VALUABLE CURRENCY AS A MEDIUM OF EXCHANGE IN THE PHILIPPINES. WE DO NOT NEED IMPORTED ITEMS FOR WE CAN BETTER OFF BY ESTABLISHING OUR LOCAL ECONOMY. WHY? is globalization helping us or raping us?

THE RATE OF INCOME IS LESS THAN THE RATE OF EXPENSE. THE TRUTH IS: Under debt finance, money is always scarced, devalued, in front of the rising prices of prime commodities and basic needs and aggravated by taxes — increasing taxes, reportedly the 12% EVAT- will become 15% by 2010.

Shut up with your stupid posts.
Comment posted on October 1st, 2009 at 2:18 am by Brett

I do not think so my posts are stupid. So then what is your solution, stupid goose? You are like a hypocrite, egostic and no care for the poor humanity. You are part of the conspiracy of controlling money. The present economic system keeps the people in the bondage of poverty, debt and interest. Albert Enstein is correct when he wrote:

‘COMPOUND INTEREST ON DEBT WAS THE BANKER’S GREATEST INVENTION, TO CAPTURE, AND ENSLAVE, A PRODUCTIVE SOCIETY.”

“Shut up with your stupid posts.”

Chair, thanks for telling me like that. But you are also one of the arrogant gooses.Grammar is the main issue, it is life and justice that matter. Whether you think of me as credible or not, this is my right to voice out concerns. And I don’t care if you think I am not. Certainly I know what I am taking about.

  35. hey people listen up. the issue here is to GIVE HELP, not to criticize or place blame on anybody.

kaya hindi umaasenso ang pilipinas dahil sa sangkatutak na bright ideas … we have our duly elected leaders to do that. let them do their jobs, in the end, sila din naman ang masisisisi.

pairalin na natin ang bayanihan spirit. if you want to pray for the country, then by all means DO SO… nobody’s stopping you… faith can move mountains. i truly believe in the power of prayer.

if you want to get your hands dirty, then DO SO. kung hindi possible na makapunta kayo sa affected areas, initiate relief goods collections within your office, barangay… even your barkada or families! andaming bagsakan diyan ng relief goods… kahit bente pesos mag kolekta ka diyan and deposit doon sa mga numbers flashed sa mga major channels natin. to momo… i agree with you 100%!

don’t just sit there… DO SOMETHING! imbes mag away away kayo diyan. friggin waste of time to lambast each other…

peace ok??? we need to keep our act together.

sa mga kababayan nating gumagawa ng effort, mabuhay kayo!

  36. There must be enough money debt free for the calamity victims and for rehabilitation.

If each and every Filipino calamity victim will be given the sum of P100,00 to P200,000 debt-free money aid, then they can provide for their own and buy their needs rather than or other than being supplied by rations from charity that are not enough for them to survive and thus they can get back sustainably to their own feet or they can plan to go back to their own respective provinces for settle down or some to migrate to other provinces for good, and abandon the sinking Metro Manila. Still sadly so many calamity victims helpless and languishing in great difficulties. Combined domestic and foreign aid are not enough and can never be enough. Government has no more money but of course debt service is the priority which is wrong. More than charity our people needs economic justice guaranteed to everyone with or without calamities. GOVERNMENT EXISTS FOR THE PEOPLE, AND NOT PEOPLE FOR THE GOVERNMENT.

This can be possible by debt-free money creation by the Government as my proposal below. This is possible if there is a real political and economic will. Money is only a figure and this is infinite. The Government can create and print money up to P100 billion and shall be enough for the victims and for rehabilitation purposes. THINK ABOUT THIS. Let us think outside the box!

If there is no lack of money, why is it that Government is continually borrowing money from domestic and foreign lenders?

There’s a tremendous current strong demand to increase the money supply in Philippine Peso to put into circulation for great needs. But this money must come from the issuance of debt-free money creation and printing, and not from domestic and foreign borrowings, not from debt-and-interest-based money nor from taxes.

There is no, and there will be no inflation on debt-free money creation and printing since the money to be issued will be according to demand and contingency needs, and since money will not come from borrowings. The pernicious root-cause of inflation is the Government debt from Bank Created Money, not from debt-free money creation.

It’s silly that Government permits the private bankers to create the money in the form of debt ex nihilo or out of nothing through the fractional reserve scam formula and the government borrows it at interest when it (government) can create its own debt-free money through the nationalization of central bank to become PEOPLE’S BANK. It’s also a double stupidity that Government’ s usual route is BORROWING EITHER OR BOTH DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN BORROWINGS when 70% of the budget goes to interest payments. Most foreign loans do not feed down to the Filipino people but increasing taxes, now privatizations, liberalizations disadvantageous to general public, more poverty, and corruptions.

The single most important factor restricting economic democracy to every Filipino people is GOVERNMENT DEBT & INTEREST, followed by corruptions. Hunger, starvation, poverty, unemployment, homelessness, crimes, violence, rebellion, corruptions, recessions, depressions, lack or absence of Government MONEY IN TIMES OF CALAMITY are the inevitable consequences of DEBT STRUCTURE AND INTEREST PAYMENTS sucking, leeching and eating the bigger percentage of people’s wealth. RAMPANT PUBLIC BORROWING IS CAUSED BY THE PRESSURES AND NECESSITY TO FIND THE INTEREST ON PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT BORROWINGS. There is no respite nor rest in borrowings.

INFLATION – caused by debt-based money creation and interest payments can be STOPPED, TAXATION AND CORRUPTIONS can be drastically lowered if the PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT can find way to put into law and implement SOCIAL CREDIT MONETARY REFORM SCHEME – economic alternative pragmatic paradigm route of balanced DEBT-FREE MONEY CREATION to be (must be) demanded and backed up by the ENTIRE FILIPINO PEOPLE, to be sponsored by the legislators with or without support of the economists, to be declared proper by the Supreme Court, to be finally approved by the President in lieu with the Department of Finance through the facilities of the Philippine central bank.

DEBT-FREE MONEY CREATION CAN PROVIDE relief from debts and interest and can lesser taxes. Debt-free money can provide extra basic income or dividend program or subsidy similar in other countries like Kuwait, state of Alaska and to other parts in the world, to every Filipino citizen equally and much more to calamity victims, as a matter of economic right by citizenship as every Filipino citizen is co-capitalist, co-heir of the country’s wealth and co-contributor of the country’s progress. This is so-called ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY.

This is my initial proposal to Government to set things right. WE MUST ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO ANY FEASIBLE COMBINATION OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AND TAXES EVEN TO INCLUDE COUNTRY’S RESERVES AND EVEN THE COLLECTION OF ALL PEOPLE’S MONEY THAT CAN FUND TO PAY OFF THE COUNTRY’S ENORMOUS DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN DEBTS. The Government could only exit from debt through the cessation to adherence to debt finance, that is, stop borrowing money from private, commercial, foreign and international bankers, stop payments of interest as we have paid more than too much and or create money in peso debt free and let there be banking mechanisms to convert peso into dollars to pay all debts OR IF NOT, OTHERWISE, THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT CAN FIND FUND IN THE NEXT 50 YEARS TIME, which I doubt, either by forcible and increasing further taxes or by further borrowings. Economic growth cannot be relied upon to produce the money needed to pay off the debts. While we finding money through taxes and further borrowings, the peso will continue to be forcibly devalued by more than half from time to time in compliance with the present criminal fluctuation of currencies.

Fluctuation of peso is not designed to serve the people but to serve the international banking industry.
THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH MONEY TO COVER THE OUTSTANDING DEBT, because money today except some coins is created by banks in the form of loans – (Check the use of this site for financial input, creating money out of nothing.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ex_nihilo), and more money is always owed back to the banks than they advance when they create loans. BANKS CREATE THE PRINCIPAL BUT NOT THE INTEREST NECESSARY TO PAY THEIR LOANS BACK.

It is apparent that it is now obvious crime that a central bank being independent, is owned by a consortium of private banks, and was set up to serve their interests, is tasked with seeing that the banks are paid back; and the only to do it is to inflate the money supply to create more peso or dollars to cover the missing interest. By devaluing peso, it also imposes additional stealth taxes upon the citizens – sadly to pay more debts even odious debts and finance corruptions. The money supply is inflated by making more loans, which adds up to the debt and interest burden that the inflated money supply was supposed to relieve. THE BANKING SYSTEM is basically a pyramid scheme, which be kept going only to continually creating more debt and so billions for the bankers and debts for the governments and for the people.

Most stimulus packages do not feed down to the people but to the powerful few, to the politicians and bankers. Professor Buckley says that IMF’s $500 Billion stimulus package to help emerging nations hard hit by global financial crisis that it is doubtful where this money is going. This money is going to rich countries’ banks. Stimulus packages are called to be grants but the money coming from the IMF will be extended in the form of loans.

According to him: These are loans that are made by the G20 countries through the IMF to poor countries. They have to be repaid and what they’re going to be used for is to repay the international banks now. . . . [T]he money won’t really touch down in the poor countries. It will go straight through them to repay their creditors. . . . But the poor countries will spend the next 30 years repaying the IMF.

Basically, said Professor Buckley, the loans extended by the IMF represent an increase in seniority of the debt. That means developing nations will be even more firmly locked in debt than they are now.

At the moment the debt is owed by poor countries to banks, and if the poor countries had to, they could default on that. The bank debt is going to be replaced by debt that’s owed to the IMF, which for very good strategic reasons the poor countries will always service. . . . The rich countries have made this $500 billion available to stimulate their own banks, and the IMF is a wonderful party to put in between the countries and the debtors and the banks.

Not long ago, the IMF was being called obsolete. Now it is back in business with a vengeance; but it’s the old unseemly business of serving as the collection agency for the international banking industry. As long as third world debtors can service their loans by paying the interest on them, the banks can count the loans as “assets” on their books, allowing them to keep their pyramid scheme going by inflating the global money supply with yet more loans. It is all for the greater good of the banks and their affiliated multinational corporations; but the $500 billion in funding is coming from the taxpayers of the G20 nations, and the foreseeable outcome will be that the United States will join the ranks of debtor nations subservient to a global empire of central bankers.

ANY FILIPINO CITIZEN WHO HAS GOODWILL will support the campaign for monetary reform and economic democracy for every Filipino. We are not born slaves of debt, we are born free from debt, and there is no valid reason for us to become slaves of debt in our own country.

Let us campaign for monetary reform and demand financial-economic security to everyone. Philippine 2010 election will be our crucial and major decision to vote new set of leaders who will give us economic democracy and justice and NOT FURTHER DEBTS, INTEREST AND INCREASING TAXES. LEADERS WHO WILL HAVE HEART AND MIND FOR THE FILIPINO PEOPLE AND NOT FOR THE INTEREST OF THE POWERFUL FEW.

Let us think right and who what is right to save our country and our people from the calamity and savage cruelty of debt and interest, economic injustice, not just from natural calamities.

    Thank you.

  38. Sure you are telling that there should be monetary reform, I agree to your vision, but maybe you can prove that by attending the debate of candidates for presidency, why not tell the government, preferably the Dept. of Finance, go to media, and spill out the beans? in that way alone you can help our fellow Filipinos to realize what should be done, to elect the BEST president who is not corrupt, and has a heart for his fellowmen. We are not here for online drama, we are here to help, you are brainy or bright I suppose, but HELP is needed NOW, And I mean NOW, maybe at least saving this page provided by yahoo will be a great help. Just chill out, dear Eric, wag masyado mainit ang ulo, for A LOT OF HELP is needed. No debates needed now, action and charity counts most. Thank you.

Huwag mag-bigay ng pera, kaya sila namimihasa sa ganyang ugali. Tumulong tayo kung ano ang magandang paraan ng pagtulong. Salamat Po. 42. Whoever’s fault may it be, the Philippines need help. This is not the time to point fingers at. What help we can give can help the victims recover. Too many lost their homes and properties. Countless were killed. What can we do to help?

The Philippines is still in need of more donations for the victims of the 2 recent typhoons which hit the country the past 2 weekends.

An American Entrepreneur already offered help by giving away $50 each to chosen people in the Philippines who are personally extending help to their own relatives, family members, friends, neighbors, and even strangers who are greatly affected by the strong storms. He even created a site that gave way for soliciting help around the globe. He has started the movement. Let us offer help in any way we can.

No amount is too little when it comes from the heart.

I have a sister who recently went back to the p.I so that she could take her nursing course there and we haven’t heard from her.
The banks are one of our countries own scam, let’s sag we do donate money but how are we sure that 100% of that money will be donated. It frustrated me when corrupt officials are trying to capitalize on such a terrible disaster.
I was raised a proud Filipino and I’m visiting home this weekend. I’m trying to fly back asap. I know alot of us filipino Americans expresses our deepest condulences and that only shows why we are so proud to be a Filipino.
It’s time to help and comfort each other. We are all family we look out for each other and we fight for one another, money is a good thing and food and other necesseceties are also needed, but what we need the most are one another..

  49. What makes Manila being flooded? What makes it lot of victims? What makes it difficult to control?

Population. We can help them through sending them back home to province. This maybe the right time to restart their lives. Most of these victims have zero left left. They may able to have better living on their province. The money we donate could be enough to send them back home and give them livelihood.

Hoping this could be good idea to some victims.
