Where do Pinoys Ask and Answer?

Tags: , ,

Why do I ask? Well, I was checking some Answers statistics this morning and discovered some very interesting figures about Pinoys in the Answers community. The first and probably the best thing about the data is the growth of Pinoys in the Answers community has been phenomenal! It’s true, ithe graph that represented our growth rate was like a challenge to mountaineers, there was no way to go but up. This surely reflects the fact that Yahoo! is the country’s leading Internet company, reaching 85% of all online users in the Philippines.

The other thing about the figures that’s very noteworthy is not all Pinoys in the Philippines access Answers from the Yahoo! Philippines Answers website. This means they still go to the original Answers website which is, well, primarily for US users. Ever since Yahoo! launched Answers in 2005 as a community-driven knowledge market website, its users have grown exponentially and internationally. As the audience became more global, it was only fitting that local versions with a local voice that featured local flavors and local points of view are launched to cater to specific countries. Hence, Yahoo! Philippines Answers was launched in 2006 (along with other local versions around the world). This is a huge development but it seems to have been overlooked by many Pinoys.

Which brings us to the following questions: If you’re a Pinoy at home in the Philippines, where do you usually access Answers? From the Philippines website or the US website? If your answer is the latter, why go there and not the Philippines Answers site? If you’re a Pinoy living abroad, do you access Answers from the Philippines website or the local version where you are based? If your answer is the latter, why go there and not the Philippines Answers site?

Please take time to answer in the comment section below and do help me spread it around the community as well. Your answers will be very valuable in helping us improve Answers and ensuring that we all have a Pinoy-centric, indispensable online experience every time we log on to Yahoo! Answers.

  3. i love to look everywhere! sometimes i just get to read the questions in the homepage (where recent questions are not arranged based on the topic/category,or the area, for that matter,),sometimes i just love to look at the Yahoo! Philippines Answers and view the questions there, sometimes give an answer if i know the answer, but most of the time i love to look at the family and relationships category(US-based).most of the time i answer questions because i think that somehow i would be of even a little help to the asker, doesn’t matter which category i am in.it helps me to learn a lot about people’s cultures (sometimes it gives me a nod, sometimes it gives me a shock) and it gives me a broader perspective in things,to widen my knowledge somehow. =)

  4. I’m a pinoy residing in the Philippines, “but not by heart”, but I always access Yahoo Answers here in the Philippines, for some shallow reasons: to learn, because i already finished college; and to share my knowledge who needs them most!

  5. I am residing in the Philippines. I used to log in to Yahoo Answers US but when I discovered Yahoo Answers Philippines, I stuck on this website. More like I’m in the right place, interacting with fellow Filipinos.

You’re right. Why go to a US website when we have our very own.

  7. As soon as I learned about Yahoo! Philippines Answers, I began using this site alternately with the US Answers. Both sites are useful to all Filipinos because there is so much to learn about our country and the rest of the world. While it feels good to interact with my fellow countrymen ,share their thoughts, feelings, and desires, and easily relate to them, I still get interested to learn about the lives, priorities, culture and value systems of people from other nations through the way they answer questions.

  8. I just wish more Pinoys would get more acquainted with the Yahoo! Philippines Answers because I have so many questions which only Pinoys can relate to and answer.

  9. I’m a Filipino, I’m a permanent resident in Rome Italy. I’m visiting the Philippines Yahoo answer website everytime as well as Italy’s yahoo answer. I once made the Philippine Answer as my Homepage but a Pop up window always remind me that they have detected that I am surfing outside Italy and its annoying, so I’ve decided to make Italy Yahoo answer as my Homepage.

  11. Glad to know that there’s Yahoo Answers Philippines. It’s always easy to access the US yahoo answers since most Filipinos can speak and write English fluently, but i feel that it’s always good to have a site of our own where we can interact with people having the same culture and answers we’re looking for.

  21. I am living abroad and I have my yahoo account since the late 90’s. I am using the account when I stumbled upon Yahoo Answers and have ever used the US site to access. It’s a matter of convenience I guess. And in anyway, I can see all the questions asked. From time to time I do check the Philippine site to check what is new, like this blog entry =)

  26. To answer your question, I set up IE to open in the main answers page then I scroll all the way down to click on “Philippines” to go to YAP.

Salamat naman at meron na rin tayong representative sa Yahoo, although most of the questions are still sourced from other English based Yahoo answers sites. Before, UK yata o sa India dahil ang mga questions ay may British trend pero tinignan ko lately, US naman. Wala pa ring purely Pinoy but we’re getting there. After a year of the question I posted, may improvement naman :D

Most Pinoys have made Home > Travel > Asia Pacific > Philippines as their homepage in Answers in the absence of our “own” site. People who frequent the site have even coined a name for themselves - YAPpers. If you can convince the people there to “move” to the main page, where your blog can be accessed, you’ll have a bigger audience.

    Good luck!

  27. I used to live in the Philippines but I am now based in the USA. But because I have been with Yahoo almost from the very beginning so I have been accessing the US Website all along.

And when I discovered Y!Answers I was of course using the US site, so what can I say, force of habit.

  28. @Promdi - thanks so much for sharing that!:) I’m hoping all the YAPers here will make Yahoo! Philippines Answers their homepage so I can reach to more Pinoys and make your online experience here more fun and engaging. Oh, and engagement can also happen offline, watch out for my post about it soon. ;)

@Japs - thanks for the comment. I know it’s hard to break an old habit, but try to get used to Yahoo! Philippines Answers so you can interact with more of your fellow Pinoys online. :)
